I was born in Brouage, France. Some people believe that I was born in 1567, however, others believe I was born in 1570. My father was Antoine Champlain, a sea captain and my mother was Marguerite Le Roy. It is also believed that my uncle, Guillaume Hellaine, was also a sea captain. I was taught how to read and write from the parish priest. Not much is known about my interests as a child. Some believe I probably learned how to sail and fish when I was young. Later in life I was a gifted writer and leader, so people assume I was a studious student. I also taught myself how to create accurate maps. I always loved navigation and this is what I said led me to explore the coast of America and especially New France.
I was a strong Catholic and I really wanted to bring Christianity into the New World. I thought I should bring the knowledge of God to the Native people. I was strongly opposed to slavery.
