The next year, in 1608, I returned to the New World to create a permanent trading post on the St. Lawrence River. I was officially the lieutenant governor of New France. On July 3, I founded Quebec. I called this settlement, the Habitation, and it was along the St. Lawrence River. This settlement had had the same problems as the others and many people died of scurvy and dysentery and only a third of the 24 people survived. I created an alliance with the Montagnais, the Algonquin and the Huron peoples to make sure we were successful in our future fur trading settlements.
