In 1611, I returned to the New World for my search of the Saint Lawrence region. Close to Mount Royal, I ordered a settlement be built. I called the site La Place Royal. There was an island across from La Place Royal, which I named the Sainte- Hélène, for my wife. I then returned back to France.
The people who once sponsored me were no longer interested, so I had to find new sponsors. While in France, a horse fell on me and almost killed me. I had to be in confinement for weeks. On October 8, 1612, I was appointed as lieutenant-general of New France.
