To set a good example, Hélène and I both moved to Quebec in 1620. She was one of the first women to live there. However, Hélène didn’t completely adapt to New France because it was so different from France. It was remote and cold. Things like roads weren’t developed, shops and theatres didn’t exist and clothing wasn’t elegant. She was well liked by the people throughout New France, including the Natives. She was wearing a mirror pendant, which was new to the native ladies. One of the women asked her “why do I see my face on you?” Hélène said “Because you are always in my heart.” In 1624 she unfortunately decided to move back to France.
In 1616, I went back to France and spoke of the New World and told the King that France needed to send more people to Canada or else the English people would take the country.
